How to Build Your Wedding Day Photography Timeline

How to Build Your Wedding Day Photography Timeline

A well-planned timeline is the difference between rushed, stressful photos and relaxed, beautiful ones. Here's how to build yours.

Start with Your Ceremony Time

Everything works backward from the ceremony. Anchor that time first, then build around it.

Buffer Time Is Everything

Add 15-20 minutes of buffer between every major transition — getting ready to first look, first look to ceremony, ceremony to portraits. Things always take longer than planned.

The Key Blocks

Getting Ready (60-90 min)

Details, candids, emotional moments. Don't rush this.

First Look (30 min)

If you're doing one, allow 30 minutes — the moment itself is quick, but the portraits immediately after are valuable.

Bridal Party Portraits (30 min)

Group shots move faster when everyone knows the plan ahead of time.

Family Formals (20-30 min)

Use a pre-built shot list (we offer one as a free resource) to keep this efficient.

Couple Portraits (30-45 min)

Golden hour is ideal. Plan this block 60-90 minutes before sunset.

Reception Coverage

First dance, toasts, cake cutting, dancing — the timeline here is looser, and that's by design.

Our Recommendation

Share your timeline with your photographer at least 2 weeks before the wedding. We'll tell you if anything looks tight.
